These are a certain company's Speedplay-specific shoes,
but the slot positions for the cleat nut's range of motion differed significantly between left and right.
Most people who've adopted Speedplay do so because they want to "tighten up the Q-factor,"
but when you crank the shoe as far in as it'll go,
the left is clearly positioned more outward than the right.
So to move the left cleat position to match the right, I drilled a 2mm-offset
dom hole (←a term I coined) in the shoe.
Since I drilled it right on the money to align with the right cleat's fore-aft position,
there's no room for fore-aft adjustment now.
If you wanted fore-aft adjustment, you'd need to elongate the dom hole in the fore-aft direction.
With LOOK 3-hole shoes, you'd use a baseplate that lets you slide the cleat fore and aft,
but with Speedplay 4-hole (well, originally Time 4-hole, but anyway),
the shoe's slot handles fore-aft positioning.
The problem here is that the left-right misalignment of these slots is large enough
to significantly affect the lateral cleat position adjustment.
