Racing Zero Sir

A customer left me the front wheel from a Racing Zero (Japanese steel road bike) for work.

There's red tape wrapped around two spots on the spokes,
and the customer said they'd fiddled with various things
in the range between these two narrow angles.

One spoke is broken,
but this was probably a consequence that came later—
they twisted it off while playing around with truing.

The neighboring spoke on the same flange side
is clearly deformed.
They were trying to fix the runout this caused
by adjusting the surrounding nipples.
This spoke also had twisting from the start at the butted end on the rim side,
and it was over-tightened, so
when I was loosening it for replacement,
it suddenly snapped with a crack!

↑For work purposes, I put marker tape on the spokes where I completely loosened the nipples.
That's three consecutive spokes on the flange with the bearing cone adjustment nut,
and one spoke on the opposite flange, for a total of four.

The nipples that had spokes jammed in them—
the customer broke one, and I broke the other by twisting it off.

The other two nipples had grip surfaces that were worn smooth,
so I replaced those as well.

I bent the spoke that got deformed and scratched from impact
back to roughly straight in the left-right direction.
The spoke that was already broken when they brought it in
remains straight as before.
In other words, if they'd brought it in at the point
when the rim runout first appeared due to the damaged spoke,
just replacing that one spoke would have been enough.

I don't want to blame the customer for what they did,
but I have to say this:
unless you're confident you can handle it yourself,
it would be much appreciated if you'd bring it in
without touching anything.
