Does a Stiffer (or Wider) Rim Make a Stiffer Wheel?
A rim swap that felt like a clear upgrade — and the workshop's honest accounting of what actually changed. With links to the original post.
"Buy a stiffer rim — or a wider one — for a stiffer wheel" is one of cycling's most intuitive upgrades. A workshop rebuild that did exactly that, and then accounted honestly for the result, is a useful corrective. Here's the case, with the source.
1. The swap that felt stiffer
A customer brought back a 50 mm tubular wheelset the workshop had built years before, to be rebuilt onto wider rims of the same 50 mm height. Same spokes (cut a touch shorter), same hubs, same lacing — only the rims changed, narrow to wide. Ridden afterward, the wheels felt stiffer. Case closed for the wide rim? Not quite.

2. What actually changed
Before the rebuild, the old wheels' spoke tension had dropped — the front especially. If you simply re-tensioned the original wheel, its tension would come back up to about the same as the rebuilt one. So the stiffness the rider felt was mostly the difference in tension, not the difference in rim.

3. A stiff rim doesn't make a stiff wheel
The workshop states it flatly: building with a stiff rim doesn't give you a stiff wheel. Asked to build the old, narrower rim into a wheel that feels no different in stiffness from the wide-rim rebuild, it can — and would. A wheel's stiffness lives in how it's tensioned and laced, not in the rim's standalone rigidity. The rim is one input, and not the decisive one.

4. What a wider rim really costs
The wide rims were heavier, and the old narrow ones had an excellent height-to-weight ratio (for scale, one of the workshop's own rims is 38 mm for 347 g). For the swap to be a net win, the wider rim's stiffness-and-aero advantage has to overcome that weight penalty — and the workshop's own verdict on whether it did here was an audible "hmm." 5. The upgrade that was real
One difference wasn't imaginary: the new rim's braking surface is finished to resist heat-fade better than the old one's, which is a genuine, rim-specific improvement on a long descent. The lesson isn't that rims never matter — it's to credit each change to the right cause. Stiffness came from the build; the rim earned its keep at the brake track.
