Wheel Weight: Why the Number on the Box Misleads

The front-plus-rear figure is the easiest thing to compare and one of the least useful — here's what a workshop weighs instead, with links to the original post.

Weight is the one wheel spec that's a hard number, so it's the one buyers compare. It's also, on its own, close to meaningless. Here's how one workshop thinks about where a wheel's grams actually matter, with the source.

1. Light rim, stiff build

The workshop's goal is simple to state: get the lightest possible rim and build it as stiffly as possible. Hub weight and spoke weight it barely worries about — not that heavy is good, but it isn't where the attention goes. A Gokiso hub, for instance, is heavier than an old PowerTap SL+ (around 428 g), and the workshop has never once criticised it on weight. The rim is the part whose weight earns scrutiny.

2. Why total weight misleads

The front-plus-rear total that makers advertise is easy to quantify and easy to compare, which is exactly the problem: it's a clear-looking number that doesn't reflect how a wheel rides. Someone with an eye for it might notice a rim-brake rear laced equal-count with a non-drive radial side, or a narrow flange — the things that actually decide a wheel. The total-weight figure conveniently sails past all of that, which is what makes it such a handy way to sell a wheel to someone who doesn't know to look.

A hard number isn't the same as a meaningful one. Total wheelset weight is precise, comparable — and a poor proxy for how a wheel performs. Treat it as one data point, not the verdict.

3. Built heavier, felt identical

Here's the test that settles it. The workshop routinely rebuilds wheels that came laced all-CX-Ray (or all-Aerolite) and makes them heavier on purpose — putting thicker, heavier spokes on some positions for a better-balanced, better-driving wheel. Not once has a rider come back saying they can feel the extra spoke weight making the wheel slower. Yet by the total-weight yardstick, that rebuild looks worse. The number went up; the wheel got better.

4. The number makers won't print

If a brand genuinely wanted to inform buyers, it would publish the rim-alone weight alongside the wheelset total — even a slightly optimistic figure would help. Almost none do. The workshop knows the real measured rim weight of a great many factory wheels, and can quote its own rims instantly — 462 g, 375 g and 435 g for three of its builds — while not even knowing those wheels' front-plus-rear totals, because that's not the number that tells you anything. If you only get one figure, you want the rim's.
