Light Rims, Actually Weighed: A Buying Guide

The lightest rims that have crossed one workshop's scale — and how to shop for a light rim without being fooled by the catalog number.

If you're going to spend money making a wheel lighter, spend it on the rim: as the wheel weight guide explains, the workshop's goal is the lightest possible rim built as stiffly as possible — hub and spoke grams barely matter by comparison. The problem is that almost no maker publishes the bare-rim weight, and when they do, the number often doesn't survive a real scale. The figures below all come from the workshop's build reports, each linked to its source; the full sortable list is in the measured rim weight database.

1. Why the rim's weight is the one to chase

Rotating weight at the outer edge of the wheel is the weight you feel when accelerating, and the rim is the big mass out there. The workshop rebuilds wheels heavier in spokes all the time and no rider ever notices — but rim weight it will quote from memory, to the gram. One caveat before you shop: a light rim doesn't automatically make a stiff wheel, and a stiff rim doesn't either — stiffness comes from the build.

2. Catalog weights drift — sometimes a lot

The same model name can gain weight for years, and individual rims scatter around the claim. All of these are measured cases from the database:

The takeaway: treat every catalog weight as a claim, not a fact. When a measured figure exists, use it — and expect ±5–15 g between individuals even then.

3. Light aluminum rims, actually weighed

Aluminum is where a light rim is cheapest. Anything measured under ~390 g is genuinely light for an aluminum clincher:

Some of these are discontinued or hard to find new — the search link will also surface used listings and successors. The practical pick is the Kinlin XR331: inexpensive, still current, measured 369–385 g across lots (late lots run heavier — weigh yours), and with a ~20 mm internal width rated for 25C-and-up tires it works for disc road and cyclocross builds.

Two things to note. First, the sub-210 g class (early Edge 1-25) is a discontinued era — nothing current matches it, and the same model's weight has grown since (see section 2). Second, weight buys builder confidence: the workshop notes the heavier latest-era ENVE 25 can be tensioned "without fear" — the flip side of chasing the ultralight end. Light is a trade, not a free win.

5. Compare across depths: height-to-weight

A 350 g rim at 22 mm and a 350 g rim at 45 mm are not the same achievement. The workshop's lens is the height-to-weight ratio — how much depth you get per gram. Measured examples of the same rim line across depths: the workshop's Wheel 9 rims run 273 g at 32 mm, 319 g at 45 mm and 354 g at 55 mm. A 65 mm Edge rim at 378 g was praised as exceptional for exactly this reason — by raw grams it looks mid-pack, but per millimetre of depth it's outstanding.

6. How to buy

  1. Look up a measured weight first — start with the database rather than the maker's page.
  2. Compare at the same depth, or use height-to-weight when depths differ.
  3. Don't pay for stiffness claims — the build determines that; buy the rim for weight, depth, width and brake track.
  4. Weigh yours on arrival. Individuals vary; a kitchen-grade digital scale settles it in seconds.
