The other day, I received several wheels I'd built previously for truing work.

↑This is one of them.
They didn't bring them in because they were out of true—
they said if I found any runout to fix it,
but they were basically perfect.
That's fine, but the thing is, this wheel's rim is 36H.
It's unusual, but it's not a standard spec—
I had it custom ordered with that spoke count.

Which rim manufacturer it is (deadpan).
There's a reason I'm being coy about it, but I can't talk about that yet.

I received a wheel from a customer.
This is a separate job from the previous one—different customer too.

It's an 88mm-high carbon rim (measured) laced with a Novatech 482 hub,
full CX-RAY Yon-zero (4-cross) lacing throughout.
They want me to respoke it with semi-competizione spokes in Yon-roku (4-spoke offset pattern),
silver spokes are fine, and they want the non-drive side soldered with junction soldering.
So I took it in.

It's built.


Even cutting to the shortest DT Competition length available domestically,
I couldn't get the spoke length needed for the drive side of this wheel, so it became Sapim CX.
The same thing happened with Nomu-Lab Wheel #3, so I figured it probably would here too,
but this wheel also has "almost zero deformation when squeezing the spokes in the front-to-back direction."
And since the non-drive side is barely moveable too, I thought "maybe junction soldering isn't needed,"
but since it flexes just slightly more than the non-drive side, I did it anyway.
Though I am tensioning the non-drive side at about the same level as the drive side on a normal wheel.
With aero spokes, when you squeeze them
your finger just slides toward the intersection point with a crisp sound.
