the source of that tacky self-portrait isn't from Fist of the North Star... it's from "Mad Max 2."
It's basically channeling the vibe of one of Humungus's (the wasteland tyrant) henchmen.

Mad Max 2 came out in 1981, and
there was definitely a movement in cinema at that time
(or so I claim)
the "hockey mask aesthetic"
and I'd argue that Humungus himself was a pioneer
in establishing this trend.
"Friday the 13th" came out in 1980, sure,
but Jason doesn't put on the hockey mask until PART 3, which came out in 1982.
"Blade Runner" has
(unless you're watching the cut version)
a half-naked female dancer wearing a hockey mask,
and Blade Runner also came out in 1982.
If anyone out there knows of an earlier example before Humungus,
I'd be grateful if you'd let me know.
