Mavic Speedcity CL

I've taken in a Mavic Speedcity for service.

It's a 700C wheel with a disc rotor mounting bracket attached to the hub,
rear overlock nut dimension of 135mm.
It's also compatible with rim brakes.
It was in production from 2004 to 2011,
but was discontinued as a single generation with virtually no specification changes.
Since the rim width itself is road-spec,
the compatible tire width is roughly 23–28C.
Aside from spoke count, the rim is carried over from the 2003 Ksyrium Elite,
and the anodized color is close to the Open Pro CD.

The front wheel has obvious runout, so truing that is of course necessary,
and the customer also wants a full general inspection.
The front wheel centered up perfectly; the rear was off but corrected quickly.

The disc mounting bracket is Shimano Centerlock,
but at debut in 2004, only the 6-hole version "Speedcity" existed.
This is the "Speedcity CL (Centerlock)".
As a disc brake wheel, it's laced equivalent to reverse Italian pattern on the front,
but the customer is using it with rim brakes, so
rather than being bound by the notion that "the disc bracket is on the left side relative to direction of travel,"
it might have been better to mount it deliberately reversed
to work as Italian pattern equivalent.

↑The high-low flange ratio is delicate enough that it might roughly offset the dish from the mounting bracket.
If I were to attach sprockets to the bracket,
I could probably fit about three for 11-speed gear width.
Since the actual rear hub's high-low ratio is typically about this degree,
the imbalance from 11-speed gear's dish can't possibly be offset.

The rear wheel is laced JIS-pattern equivalent.
On Mavic rear wheels, the anti-freewheel side with tangent lacing becomes
Italian pattern equivalent,
so they've deliberately done this for the disc brake specification.

And the rear hub has equal-diameter flanges on both sides.
Whether they prioritize wheel left-right balance (high-low flange)
or torsional resistance from disc braking (low-high flange)—
I wanted to peek at Mavic's design philosophy,
but they probably settled on equal-diameter flanges after careful consideration.
The fact that they deliberately made the front hub high-low,
and that many other Mavic road wheels feature high-low flanges on the rear,
means there's no reason they wouldn't have made this one high-low too.

I thought so, but actually this flange profile is
carried over from another existing wheel, making it JIS-pattern equivalent,
and since the flange catch orientation is unambiguous, the lacing method can be changed.
That said, since a disc bracket necessarily requires
a Speedcity-specific hub body to be machined,
they certainly could have made it high-low then...

Manufacturers don't make things purely in pursuit of performance alone—
they also rigorously pursue cost-effectiveness.
The equal-diameter flanges probably relate to that too.

"Threading holes only on the inner circumference of the rim" is
Mavic's FORE technology and patent.
To realize it with steel spokes, they attach nipple adapters
(long ones, mind you) and build the wheel with standard nipples—
this was the original Ksyrium Elite specification.
From a certain period, Ksyrium Elite's marketing line included
"the rim is the same as SL," and
the threading size on the nipple adapter and
the threading size on the nipples that come with
Ksyrium's aluminum spokes are identical (otherwise rim interchangeability wouldn't work).
Perceptive folks probably caught on, but
with this nipple adapter, you could build a wheel
with Ksyrium rims using an ordinary 18H front hub or 20H rear hub... (and so on)

So the rim's outer circumference has no holes except the valve hole.
Mavic, the originator of UST (the MTB tubeless standard),
is not enthusiastic about road tubeless, probably because they had reservations
or abandoned it after extensive testing.

Actually, if you put a tubeless valve and tubeless tire on a Ksyrium,
it retains air for at least a day of riding.
If tire compatibility is good, it holds longer
(this means individual variance, not model-specific)
This rim similarly should be capable of mounting tubeless tires.
Without a bead seat, the tire slips right off the instant of a puncture and
you could literally die, so I've never done more than brief test rides in that state.
It's extremely dangerous.

Bead-seat-less road tubeless rims, which aren't that different from this situation,
seem popular simply because they're somewhat light,
