Another day with wheels (and so on).


Got a Rolf Prima Vigour from a customer on loan.
It's currently laced with Sapim aero spokes for round-hole rims,
but since those spokes have a heavier specific gravity than CX-RAY,
the customer wants the front wheel converted to CX-RAY and the rear wheel to semi-competition lacing.

The rear wheel had some centering issues.
Doesn't matter since I'm taking it apart anyway.
I didn't even check the front wheel initially.

Got out a big chunk of metal shavings.
It's larger than the rim holes, so just shaking won't dislodge it.

Got it built up.

The front wheel is CX-RAY outpoke radial lacing.

The Rolf Prima uses internal nipples,
and they use these oddly long ones.

The centerline of the spoke and nipple is angled relative to the rim,

but the outer hole is perpendicular to the rim, so
forcibly clamping this with a tool results in

↑the spoke developing a bend just before the threaded section.
Given that the front wheel has wide flanges,
lacing with the original nipples was a bit of a struggle,
so while not strictly necessary, I used shorter pillar-type internal nipples
with the same hex dimensions.
Because of this, the spoke length is about 5mm shorter than before the rebuild.


For the rear wheel, I just swapped in semi-competition spokes without changing the lacing pattern.
Freewheel side inpoke through to non-freewheel side outpoke, with the same crossing overlap.
Reused the nipples and matched the spoke length to what it was before the rebuild.
It's unusual for me to shoot with tires on this time—
it's a message to this wheel's owner.
It builds up fine.

The tire after the rebuild is a Veloflex Corsa 25C,
and from the tread pattern, the label—which only appears on one side—comes to the left.
Looking closely, there are rotation direction markings,
and they match what I think the rotation direction should be, so

this tire gets the label on the left side.
Both of them are mounted that way.
