So suddenly, I'm going to write about DT's ARC/ERC 1100/1400
wheels.

ARC stands for Aero Road Carbon
with an inner rim width of 20mm (17mm for rim brake models),
and rim heights of 50mm, 62mm, and 80mm.
ERC stands for Endurance Road Carbon
with an inner rim width of 22mm,
and rim heights of 35mm and 45mm.
The wheel grades come in 1100 and 1400,
with the 1100 being the higher-end model (or rather, the flagship).

The 1100 has a hub equivalent to their 180,
with front wheel spokes being Aero Lite II in equal-diameter left and right builds,
and rear wheel spokes being Aero Comp II/Aero Lite II
in unequal-diameter left and right builds.
These Aero Lite II and Aero Comp II spokes
are quite tricky, and are special spokes adopted only in the 1100-grade wheels.
Since the spoke heads are diecut (more on that later),
spoke breakage at the neck should be fairly unlikely,
but if the wheel gets dropped or something gets caught and spokes bend,
it becomes difficult to repair with replacement spokes.
The 1400 has a hub equivalent to their 240,
with spokes front and rear, left and right all being
Aero Comp in equal-diameter left and right builds.
Regarding the carbon rims on the 1100 and 1400,
the manufacturer says they're the same.

So this time, the ERC Diecut db 35 front wheel
was being offered at a special price, so

I stocked just 6 front wheels.
Many of you probably see where this is going—
just like I did with the Ultegra C36 wheels before,
I'm going to rebuild 3 of these as rear wheels
and sell them as front and rear wheel sets at special pricing.

There are other rims with better height-to-weight ratios than this one,
but this rim tensions up incredibly well.
With internal nipples, that's even more pronounced.

240-equivalent hub, 24H left and right equal count, all Aero Comp,
two-cross symmetrical lacing both sides.
For the front wheel, I'll re-lace it with the right side as CX-RAY,
and for the rear wheel, using a Tni Revo disc hub,
I'll rebuild it in black semi-comp 24-hole lacing with spoke ties.

The instruction sheet attached to the spokes in the previous image has been removed,
and the rim tape is in place—
this is the measured weight of just one wheel.
The listed weight is 679g by the way.

The rim tape sits loosely on the rim,
but since there are internal nipples, I have to peel it off to disassemble it.

↑The measured weight of the rim.

Diecut refers to
the process of flattening the head portion of straight-pull spokes
to prevent the spokes from rotating in their flat direction.

The 12 left-side spokes at 285mm came to 70.6g.
So the spoke specific gravity is
70.6÷12÷285÷0.0257
which equals 0.80324023... or roughly 80%.
CX Sprint is about 78%, so
Aero Comp can be repaired with CX Sprint spokes.
With DT, among hubs, spokes, nipples,
other parts, and complete wheel sets,
the complete wheel sets will be handled by a different distributor
starting January 1st, 2025.
So that's probably why my current distributor's stock
is being offered at special prices,
but next year this source material for rebuilding
may no longer be available.
The ERC1400 Diecut db front wheel has
a list price of ¥145,000 pre-tax, ¥159,500 with tax, so
two front wheels would be ¥319,000 with tax in total, but
as for the selling price of the front and rear wheels rebuilt at our shop...
I'll note that in the usual place.
Currently I've secured materials for 3 front and rear wheel sets,
but the distributor still has stock, so
if you reserve with us before the end of this year,
we can fulfill orders as long as we have front wheel material.
For reservations, please visit us in person or call.
