Wheels again today (etc., etc.).
Continuing from yesterday.
Rebuilding the rear wheel on this Cosmic 40 SL.
Nearly press-fit (won't come out with finger pressure alone).
The left quick-release end cap has marks from pliers-type tools on it,
and the hub bearing feels gritty when you spin it.
And the right hub flange has chain-drop marks on it.
More than four spokes are visibly bent.
The customer said they got fed up with how often the Instant Drive 360 needed maintenance,
but on top of that, there were quite a few other issues
that made me hesitant to send it back as-is.
Rebuilt it.
660 hub, 24H, black half-Compé, 4-cross laced,
black aluminum nipples with spoke-end capped.
Back in the day, we'd pretty often replace rims on Aksiums and Ksyriums,
but with current Mavic wheels,
I'd say rim replacement is practically never done.
We might disassemble a wheel that got rim damage in an accident and weigh the rim,
but honestly, the chance to weigh a completely undamaged rim—whether one we pulled off a wheel
or a replacement rim we ordered in—is almost never.
Even at shops that carry Mavic,
I'd say that in a given year, you'd be hard-pressed to find one that's actually handled
a bare Cosmic SL40 rim as a separate component for any reason.
What I'm getting at is:
the chance to measure the actual weight of a Cosmic 40 SL rim is extremely rare.
I do weigh it while I've got the parts out, naturally,
but I'm not telling you what it is.
