Rebuilt the front wheel of a SHARQ57 with a dynamo hub

Wheels again today (and so on).

A customer dropped off a front wheel
from a Fulcrum SHARQ57.

Fulcrum's wave carbon rim wheels come in
the high-end SHARK model
and the mid-range SONIC model,
but both are converted from common nouns to proper nouns
by changing the last letter to Q
(SHARK→SHARQ, SONIC→SONIQ).
There's also a lower-tier aluminum rim version of SONIC,
but naturally the aluminum rim doesn't have the wave shape.

The numbers after the model name indicate rim depth,
but this is measured at the lowest point of the wavy rim—
the highest point is 5mm higher than that.
So a 42 would be 42–47mm deep, and
a 57 would be 57–62mm deep.

Looking between the rim holes, the wave shape
is not left-right symmetrical but quite complex.
So the rim does have left and right orientation,
but since the hole staggering is clearly left-right-left,
you can't accidentally assemble it backwards.

2:1 lacing, 24H, Ж (Zhe) pattern,
three-cross tangential lacing on one side.

The customer wanted this rebuilt with
a dynamo hub, but even though it's 24H,
the hole staggering is so extreme that
I was about to tell them it won't work with
a standard 12+12H balanced hub, when...

They showed me a 2:1 lacing
straight-spoke dynamo hub from SON.
Indeed, this will work.
The hub dimensions are too different though,
so the original spokes can't be reused.

This hub is the model
"SON 29 S TR Disc Center Lock 16:8".

Breaking down the meaning piece by piece:
SON is the manufacturer name first.
Traditionally, the 28 was SON's regular hub,
coming in quick-release or through-axle versions,
rim brake or disc brake versions, etc.,
but this 29 hub only comes in
through-axle disc brake configuration,
and the S after 29 means straight-spoke,
though since the 29 currently only comes in straight-spoke version anyway,
it's always 29 S.

The 28 has BOOST-spec versions,
but the 29 S only comes in 100×12mm standard.

The 29 S with tangential lacing on both sides comes in
balanced 24H or 28H,
with center-lock disc mounts only.
Hubs with tangential lacing on one side and radial on the other
have "TR" in the model name—meaning
Tangential lacing pattern / Radial lacing pattern.
It doesn't mean tubeless-ready.

That 29 S TR Disc comes with
either 6-bolt or center-lock disc mounts,
and each of those comes in 16:16 (32H)
and 16:8 (24H) configurations.

To summarize: through-axle disc brake straight-spoke hubs only—
balanced, both-sides tangential, 24H, center-lock
balanced, both-sides tangential, 28H, center-lock
balanced, one-side radial, 32H, 6-bolt
2:1 lacing, one-side radial, 24H, 6-bolt
balanced, one-side radial, 32H, center-lock
2:1 lacing, one-side radial, 24H, center-lock
—that's six types total,
and this one is the last configuration I listed.

Actually, the original Fulcrum hub does this too,
but the two spokes coming from one flange
are nearly collinear—they run nearly tangent to the hub flange circle—
and the spoke head position when treated as a tangent
matches the actual spoke head position exactly,
creating a Ж pattern.
For 2:1 lacing without rest phase,
this is absolutely critical, and...

With this stupid Roval nonsense,
instead of the actual spoke head position
shown by the taped spoke in the image above,
the spoke head position treated as tangent
ends up at the white dot they put on the hub flange.

So technically, Roval wheels
(with some exceptions; the CLX50-series hubs are different)
aren't actually as high-low flange as they look.
And doing XI lacing on evenly-spaced holes
without rest phase is just dumb.

to really emphasize the Ж pattern.

Since I had no intention of doing any tie-and-solder work
and that's how it came originally,
I didn't weave the final tangential cross.

The rim has no holes on the outer edge
besides the valve hole.
Looking at the nipple holes and valve hole on the inner edge,
this rim is quite thick,
but the edge of the outer valve hole
is quite thin.
So you'd think the weight is concentrated toward the inner edge,
and that effect might actually be noticeable compared to
other rims of similar weight—
the difference in outer-edge lightness
is apparently something you can feel.

Also, wave-shaped rims don't get caught
as much by crosswinds for their depth,
and on a front wheel anyway, this isn't
just hearsay—it's genuinely noticeable.

When rebuilding a wheel, you can leave
the special nipples on the inner rim holes
held in place with tape or whatever,
which reduces the work steps, but...

I wanted to weigh just the rim,
so I removed all the nipples.
Grouping them in fours like in the image above
makes it visually easy to verify the count,
but structurally the wheel is organized as
3×8=24, not 4×6=24.
The piece in the center of the image is the valve bushing.

An opportunity to measure the bare SHARQ57 rim weight
doesn't come around every day.
Since the actual weight came from real measurement
but the work was incredibly tedious,
I'm not giving that data away for free.
