Nomu Lab Diary

Built a wheel with R45 hub and AL22W rim (Part 2, but it's the front wheel)

Another day of wheel building (and so on and so forth).

Continuing from the other day.
I built a front wheel using a Chris King hub
and an AL22W rim.

With these nipples, once the spoke threads advance to a certain point,
the resistance suddenly becomes stiff.
Since there's no threadlocker applied to the hole,
it seems the loose-lock function is built into
the dimensions of the threaded hole itself.

That stiffness feels so much
like what happens when the spoke is too long
and reaches the end of the threads,
causing the spoke to rotate with the nipple,
that I was confused during wheel building.

In reality, as shown in the photo above,
the spoke length is correct.

However, when the spoke reaches this far,
turning the nipple causes an unusually large amount of
spoke twist, and because
the flat surface where the tool grips has
loose cutting precision,
these nipples made wheel building difficult.
