Nomu Lab Diary

Built a Wheel with R45 Hub and AL22W Rim (It's the Front Wheel, Yet Part 2)

Another wheel day (and so on).

I built the front wheel,
the matching pair to the rear wheel I assembled the other day.

Chris King R45 Navy Hub, 24H
CX-RAY outpoke radial laced.

Man, I'm glad this is radial lacing.
I'd mistakenly thought the hub I was entrusted with was 20H,
so I'd prepared spokes accordingly.
But if it had been tangent laced, say 4-cross,
and I'd cut the spoke length,
the spoke length would differ between 20H and 24H,
unlike with radial lacing.

However, after checking,
with this hub and this rim (AL22W),
the 24H 4-cross is about 3mm shorter
than the 20H 4-cross option.
Since the CX-RAY can be cut by up to 6mm max,
if I'd prepared it for the 20H version with a cut
of 3mm or less,
it would have been reusable.

As it turned out this time,
the stock spoke length worked perfectly,
so I assembled it with uncut CX-RAY spokes.

The rear wheel had silver nipples,
but I laced the front wheel with rainbow-colored (VAS) nipples.
This is partly the customer's request,
but it's also something I do frequently on my own wheels too.
The reason is simple: you can only admire rainbow-colored nipples
while riding if they're on the front wheel,
so that's the only place I do it.
