Rebuilt the mysterious carbon wheel with のむラボホイール No. 2

Another day with wheels (and so on).

A customer left a front wheel with a carbon rim with me.

↑On the left side of the image, the braking surface is in rough shape.
It looks like it got deformed from buckling.

The customer wanted a rim replacement,
so we're rebuilding it with のむラボホイール No. 2, which has a similar rim height.
We're switching from external nipples to internal nipples,
so the spoke length will actually need to be longer, and we can't reuse the old spokes.
(It would be possible with an internal nipple rim around 45mm height, though)

This wasn't originally planned, but we ended up building the rear wheel too.

24H rim laced 2:1 with a 32H Wing hub.
This rim also has rough spots,
but it's not as bad as the front, so it seems usable.

The customer brought the rear wheel,
but I build 24H rims with 24H hubs (laughs), so
this 32H hub can't be reused.
Plus, unlike the front hub, the bearings were completely shot.
For the rim, we'll use のむラボホイール No. 2.5, which has a 50mm rim height, so that'll be sourced separately.
The hub will be an Evolite hub, 24H.
(It's superior dimensionally to the Wing hub)

When building with that hub and rim,
I checked if we could reuse the spokes from this wheel
—24H all-black CX-RAY Rokuzero, 2:1 lacing—
and found that the freewheel side doesn't match.
I haven't checked the non-freewheel side, but there are only 8 spokes, so
having 8 used ones and 4 new ones to make up the 12 needed for the rebuild
feels wrong, so we won't reuse them.

Which means this rear wheel
is only needed to move the tire and sprocket over after the rebuild,
and doesn't need to be disassembled.
So even after building the new rear wheel,
it can exist alongside the old one.
Hehe, this is interesting.

「I didn't understand where the 'interesting' part was in just not having reusable parts.
If you don't mind, could you explain?」
I received a comment asking this.
It's not interesting that there are no reusable parts,
it's interesting that I don't need to disassemble the wheel,
so I can compare two rear wheels side-by-side
. To me, anyway.
If we'd disassembled and rebuilt, the old wheel wouldn't remain,
so when explaining to the customer, I'd only be able to
convey the differences before and after with pre-recorded measurements,
but if both exist simultaneously, that work is saved considerably.
Since the original wheel is still in usable condition,
we can even take it for a test ride comparison.
It's rare to have the chance not to disassemble the original wheel,
so letting the customer clearly see the difference in quality is
「interesting」to me.

Evolite hub 24H, semi-comp 46 lacing, no cross-lacing yet.
Even in this state, it has far superior stiffness to the rear wheel the customer brought in.
(At least numerically, it's completely clear)
I wanted to investigate whether that difference was surpassed only barely by cross-lacing,
so I haven't cross-laced it yet.
