Wheels again today (and so on).
Continuing with the rebuild of the 650C Open Pro.
The rear wheel is already rebuilt with black half-comp spokes,
and for the front wheel I'm switching from a 5800 hub, 32H, black Revolution spokes in Italian (6x6) lacing to a 9000 hub with the same lacing pattern but using black Competition spokes.
Whether it's all CX-RAY or all Competition, the spoke tension threshold before "unyo-on" (rim collapse) occurs comes after the Open Pro's structural limit,
so effectively you can build the wheel without worrying about unyo-on happening.
Since I'm switching from Revolution to Competition spokes, it might look like a downgrade at first glance considering price, grade, and weight from the same manufacturer,
but I'm confident that the rider will feel the finished wheel performs better than before.
That said, this is more tensioned than the rear wheel was before its rebuild, but I think it could use a bit more tension.
Revolution spokes have nearly the same spoke weight ratio as CX-RAY, but the butted section starts early on the threaded end,
so there's very limited length that can be adjusted with a spoke cutter.
For a rear wheel with equal-sided lacing where the freewheel side is 2mm shorter than the non-freewheel side,
it's just barely possible to cut freewheel-side spokes from non-freewheel-side material—just barely.
But that doesn't mean
you build a wheel with whatever length you have lying around.
Black spokes with a black end face means these weren't cut with a spoke cutter,
so it's not a case of accidentally cutting too much—
either these were the lengths we had in stock,
or we pushed through with spokes we'd miscalculated the length on when ordering.
It's built.
