The Shamal Ultra rear wheel that came on the bike I took in for cable and chain replacement
makes a loud "rooooom" noise when it spins.
It seems like either the bottom bracket or the rear hub is corroded,
but the rear hub rotation has a gritty feeling,
while the rotation is smooth when the freebody is pulled out.
So that means the bearings inside the freebody are corroded,
and since there's corrosion spread below the outer bearing on the hub shaft,
it looks like the outer bearing is shot.
It looks like the corrosion is rotating,
and that was exactly right.
The inner bearing was also damaged, though not as badly as the outer one,
and since these aren't expensive parts,
I went ahead and happily replaced both.
↑When I spray parts cleaner on the outer bearing, rust juice comes right out.
The shaft corrosion hadn't eaten deeply into the material,
so I managed to clean it up.
All fixed.
