Another day, another wheel (and so on).

A customer brought in the rear wheel of a first-generation Shamal Ultra (Fulcrum wheel).
I've done a rim replacement on the front wheel before,
but since the gold-colored Shamal rim is discontinued, I'm doing repairs with a black Shamal rim instead.
For the rim replacement and everything up to "Help me, chonmage" (→here),
and for how the "Help me, chonmage" situation turned out (→here)
This rear wheel also has some bead hook deformation, though not as severe as the front wheel,
and the customer is asking if it can be fixed if possible.

Before

After
It came out pretty clean.
If the customer's first choice wasn't a "black rim replacement," this condition would be more than usable.
However, once this rim replacement is complete, the customer will have
one pair of gold Shamals and one pair of former gold Shamals with blackened rims,
so the latter will serve as spares for the former.

As for the gold Shamal, rim and decal supplies have ended (production ceased and stock depleted).
Only spokes are still available,
so I stocked up a decent quantity of spokes for front, rear right, and rear left
(with later Shamal Ultra models—Mega G3 onwards—the front and rear right are the same length and shared,
but the first generation has three different spoke lengths).
It turned out to be unnecessary worry, but I wanted to be ready to respond immediately
if a spoke broke during work.
In the image above, the decal is peeling, but that same decal is discontinued.

↑This is the front wheel of the matching one I repaired before.
This rim comes without a decal as its specification,
and I applied a Shamal Ultra dark label decal afterwards.
The reason it has no decal is
because this rim shares the same part number between Shamal Ultra and Eurus (Fulcrum wheel).
After the rear wheel became Mega G3,
the Shamal Ultra has a carbon-shell hub/USB bearings,
and the Eurus has an aluminum-shell hub/steel ball hub—these are the specification differences, but the rim is the same.
I suppose Fulcrum found it difficult to differentiate in this area,
so they discontinued the Racing 1.

Before Mega G3, the Shamal Ultra and Eurus had different rims
(Eurus used brass nipples with slightly smaller rim hole diameter,
and the rim edges were either angular or rounded, etc.).
So this rim, which is "exclusive" to the Shamal Ultra before Mega G3, came with a decal from the start,

but the combination of "this era's rim with its matching dark label"
never existed in the factory configuration,

so I had to make it myself.

I could have just tied the black rim to the gold rim and moved the spokes over for an easier job,
but I disassembled it because I wanted to wash the hub shell.

It has a Shimano 10-speed freebody attached,
but the customer wants to upgrade to an 11-speed freebody.
The brown stuff on the spline isn't rust,
but copper-filled prep grease used to prevent galling on titanium fasteners, etc.
I'm not sure why it was applied in the first place.

The spring on the freebody's pawl is deformed enough that it needs replacement,
but since I'm replacing the freebody itself, I'll leave it as is.
I did wash it, just in case.

I gave the hub anultrasonic cleaning.

↑Right is the freebody side, left is the non-freebody side spokes.

Before

After
I cleaned the spokes as thoroughly as I could.

The aluminum nipples from this era do have their plating flaking off.
In fact, the surface is slightly roughed in places, but it's not too bad,
and since there weren't any stuck nipples when I disassembled it,
I decided to clean them and reuse them.

I got almost all the way assembled without the freebody.

I need the freebody for the final centering,
so I installed it before completing the wheel.

All assembled.

I lined up the images with its matching wheel.

I also have the gold Shamal front wheel from the customer,
and this one needs an overhaul too.

There was a greasy, oily residue all over the hub and rim.

I overhauled the hub.
After reassembly there was a slight centering offset, but
fortunately it had some runout, so I was able to dial in the centering while truing it.
