Eurus

A customer entrusted me with their Eurus.

Starting with the front wheel.
It's got several thousand kilometers on it, but the customer is the second owner.
Three spokes are bent, and regarding the repair of these
maybe they were told all the spokes need replacing, or that it can't be fixed anymore,
or they were quoted an outrageous repair fee
and the first owner gave up on the repair.
That's just my own speculation, though,
but I do hear stories like that a lot.

One is clearly bent (in the image above),
one is twisted, and one is slightly bent.
The twisted one is the result of some amateur attempting a repair,
not from a crash or impact.

I removed the spokes. The stamp reads "radial, 4 crossing pattern".
The customer asked me to add a stylish accent during the repair,
so I'll install one red spoke,
but with a spoke transplant, there's no need for the customer to buy three black spokes.

Fixed.

The pre-repair state had bent spokes mixed in, so
I didn't check the preliminary center, but
with mostly just "adjustment using the replacement spokes alone"
the center deviation at the point of truing radial and lateral runout is as you see,
so the as-hung state might have been dead center.

I centered it.

The spokes with blue tape are the 2 new replacement spokes,
since I wanted the red spoke at the rim hole next to the valve hole,
the black spoke removed from there is being used for the repair (with white tape),
plus the red spoke—these 4 locations are where spokes were temporarily removed.

Next, the rear wheel.
Both front and rear hubs had no grease loss or anything, and were in nearly new condition,
so I didn't do an overhaul, but there was play in the bearings.
The rear hub especially was pretty bad.

This is a Campagnolo wheel, but
in the case of Fulcrum, the red spoke for the stylish accent is
"the rim hole on the left side near the valve hole (for the rear wheel, the non-drive side)".

DSC05132msn2.jpg
Following that convention, it would look like this, but

DSC05128msn2.jpg
this Shamal Ultra's non-drive side has "radial, 3 crossing" spokes.
Actually, the drive side has "radial, 4 crossing" spokes, so
if I put the stylish accent on the "right side near the valve hole"
I could use a black spoke removed from the drive side for the front wheel repair
and reduce by one the spokes the customer has to buy...I knew that, but
this time I wanted to insist on putting the red spoke on the left side.

Dead center. The images are after work, but it wasn't off before either.
Since the owner changed, I swapped out the Campagnolo freehub body
for a Shimano 11-speed freehub body,
but no center shift occurred from that.
At the time of the image it's still the Campagnolo one, but I checked again after the swap.

↑This is the phase between the "A" of CAMPA and the "G" of GNOLO on the rear rim,
but the GNOLO sticker is more discolored.
The thin film on the outermost layer of the sticker is peeling,
and it's attracting dust because of that. It's sticky to the touch.
Considering the cost and wait time for replacing this,
I thought it better to leave it as is this time.

↑The edge of the "e" side of eurus
Here too, the film is peeling back.

DSC05135msn2.jpg
The phase with no spoke between the G's on the rear rim
likely had a hook placed there to lock the bike.

↑Replacement spokes
The rear left "radial, 3 crossing" was just removed to make it red and isn't bent.
It can be used for rear left repairs.

The yellow tape on the three "radial, 4 crossing" spokes was applied by the customer, but
DSC05139msn2.jpg
the one that's clearly bent (the one from the start) and
DSC05140msn2.jpg
the twisted one are one thing, but
DSC05142msn2.jpg
this slightly bent one—
I was impressed they noticed it by hand palpation while the spoke was under tension.
If you put it on a truing stand, you'd catch the slight runout from this,
but if they found it by touch alone, that's impressive.
Just to be sure, I checked all the other spokes on both wheels,
and found no problems other than those three with tape.
