I Replaced the Rim on a Shamal Ultra

Another day with wheels (and so on).

A customer brought in the front wheel of a Shamal Ultra (high-end Campagnolo wheelset).

There's damage running roughly halfway around one side of the rim.
It happened from scraping against a guardrail—clang clang clang.

While replacing the rim, I want to explain the meaning of the numbers in Campagnolo rim part numbers.
001 = tubular front rim
002 = tubular rear rim
003 = clincher front rim
004 = clincher rear rim
013 = 2WAY-FIT front rim
014 = 2WAY-FIT rear rim
The first version starts with these numbers, and with each model change,
the hundreds digit increases by one.

For example, the 2010 Hyperone tubular front rim
is WH-201HY, so you know it's the third generation.
But the 2010 Hyperone One rear clincher rim
is WH-004HY1, so you know it's the first generation.
By the way, Hyperone One only exists in clincher specification.

So this rim is WH-303SHB,
which tells us it's the fourth generation clincher rim.
SHB means Shamal Black.
The sticker part number is LAB-SHCB12,
which means Label Shamal Clincher Black, first released in 2012.
If DK is appended at the end, it becomes a dark label,
but without it, it's a bright label.

The customer's preference was to avoid replacing spokes if possible,
but there were two spokes with minor scrapes.
However, since the damage wasn't deep and they weren't bent, I left them as-is.

Since the hub flange is hook-style,
loosening the nipples about halfway gives you enough slack to slide the hub out.

DSC05437amx9.jpg
But I found a spoke that had no scrapes but was bent.
This one needed replacement.

DSC05447amx9.jpg
Got it built up.

I positioned the magnet-equipped spoke in the same location as before the rim replacement:
"right side, next to the valve hole."

It was bent more in the left-right direction.

Next job: another customer brought in the rear wheel of a Shamal Ultra.
The rim is WH-304SHB, and the sticker is LAB-SHCB12DK.
I told the customer I'd build it the day the rim arrived—but I lied.
It arrived the day before yesterday. Sorry about that.

While disassembling, I noticed there was a history of spoke replacements at our shop.
Three spokes had been replaced before.

DSC05456amx9.jpg
Got it built. All the spokes were reusable.

And yet another job.
Another customer brought in the front wheel of a Shamal Ultra.
The rim is WH-403SHB, and the sticker is LAB-SHCB17.

DSC05458amx9.jpg
The rim is bent like a potato chip, so it needs replacement.

But only the sticker has arrived so far, so I can't build it yet.
In terms of when the orders were placed, this one should have come before the two I built today...
Maybe it's because it's a newer model and they don't have spare rims stockpiled?

Speaking of stickers, Shamal Ultra traditionally came with a four-sticker set on one rim side:
SHAMAL / ULTRA / CAMPA / GNOLO
But now it's a two-sticker set: SHAMAL ULTRA / CAMPAGNOLO.
With Racing Zero, it's a three-sticker set: FULCRUM / RACING / ZERO,
and the FULCRUM sticker is long, making it difficult to apply.
But this 2017-debut Shamal Ultra version
is even longer than that.
