Nomu Lab Wheel

The Long Road to Building Nomu Lab Wheel #5's Front Wheel

Another day of wheel work (and so on).
DSC00264amx10.jpg
A customer brought in Nomu Lab Wheel #5, which was built with a PowerTap G3 hub.

When I tried to install the tire using Grunge's "Tire Install" tool—basically pliers-like equipment for mounting tires—

DSC00265amx10.jpg
the tool slipped and deformed the rim's bead hook.
...So the rim needed replacing.

Moving the rim...

Done.
The rim in the back is the one before the swap.
While it is technically wheel work, since it's just a rim swap,
it doesn't meet today's "another day of wheel work" criteria.
Who came up with such a rule anyway? ← You did.

Next up, a separate job: a customer brought in the front wheel from Nomu Lab Wheel #5.
The rim in the back is the one from the previous swap.

It's a Woodman carbon-body 24H CX-RAY four-cross lacing hub.

The rim got damaged in a get-tangled-and-crash incident, so it needed replacing.

Since this was built quite a while back, it used Sapim's 14mm aluminum nipples.

DSC00275amx10.jpg
When I loosened the nipples, white corrosion came pouring out of the thread pockets.

DSC00276amx10.jpg
This is one of the reasons I don't use Sapim nipples.
It's not that DT nipples absolutely never corrode like this,
but the frequency is completely different.

Moving the rim...

Done.
I've swapped the aluminum nipples for DT 12mm ones.

The rim in the back is the one before the swap.
While it is technically wheel work, since it's just a rim swap,
it doesn't meet today's "another day of wheel work" criteria.

Finally, from here on we have actual wheel work:

I built the front wheel for Nomu Lab Wheel #5.

It's a 20H CX-RAY outpoke radial laced Evolite hub.
