SES 4.5 AR Disc

A customer brought in a Smart Envision System 4.5 AR Disc for service.

The SES 4.5 has a compatible tire width of 23–28C, and
when mounted with a 25C tire, the shape combined with the rim is aerodynamically optimal.
However, the SES 4.5 AR Disc has a compatible tire width of 28–32C,
with a recommended width of 28C.
The manufacturer's website also lists a 3.4 AR Disc model
with the same compatible tire width as the 4.5 AR Disc,
but since this AR series uses hookless rims,
it's compatible with tubeless tires only.

In the SES 3.4 series,
there are three models: SES 3.4, SES 3.4 Disc, and SES 3.4 AR Disc
(whether they're officially sold domestically in Japan is another story),
In the SES 4.5 series,
there are two models: SES 4.5 and SES 4.5 AR Disc (there's no disc version for the 25C width recommendation),
In the SES 5.6 series,
there are two models: SES 5.6 and SES 5.6 Disc,
and there's no AR specification in this lineup.
And on a completely unrelated note,
there are disc wheels made for disc brake specifications,
and their model name is SES Disc Disc.

This time, the front and rear wheels came from an auction at a certain FJT (second-hand bike shop), and the customer requested an inspection.
Let me start with the front wheel.

Chris King hub, 24H, all-black CX-RAY, 4-cross reverse Italian lacing,
but unlike the hub in my previous post, this one is for 6-hole rotors.

There was off-center dishing, and before lateral runout, there was radial runout.

Fixed it.
It felt like I was handed a wheel someone else had started building and told to finish it completely.

Next, the rear wheel.

A rear hub of the same model as the front,
24H, all-black CX-RAY, reverse Italian 4-cross lacing,
but it doesn't appear to be made in-house by the manufacturer.
There was no label with a name on the outer circumference either.
The freewheel body at the time of drop-off was for Shimano,
but during service I swapped it to a SRAM XDR.

There was very slight off-center dishing,
but it was difficult to photograph so I didn't.
I'm not sure if the builder is the same as the front wheel,
but this one was built properly.

↑This is a hookless rim, and the manufacturer
lists the compatible tubeless tires
in considerable detail on their website.
They state that they don't guarantee compatibility or accidents from non-compatible tires,
so anyone using an AR Disc (though only the 4.5 is currently available domestically)
needs to be well aware of this.

Here's some excerpted information:
First, Hutchinson's proprietary
"Road Tubeless" standard is not compatible.
So starting with Fusion 2,
through the current Fusion 5 Performance 11 Storm and
Fusion 5 All Season 11 Storm,
tires from Specialized and Soyo in the
"Road Tubeless" standard are also not recommended.

Hutchinson Sector Tubeless is compatible at 28C but not at 32C.

Both the IRC Formula Pro RBC and Lite in 28C are supported.

Specialized tubeless tires also have compatible models—
the 2020 model doesn't use the "Road Tubeless" standard,
so there are compatible versions.

Continental Grand Prix 5000 TL in 28C is not compatible.
Grand Prix 5000 TL also comes in 32C, but
since it's not listed in the 32C compatible model list, 32C is also incompatible.

Mavic's Ixion Pro UST 28C is incompatible, yet
Ixion Elite All-Road UST 30C is compatible.

Panaracer Gravel King models up to 28C are not tubeless-compatible,
but 32C and above are tubeless-compatible. However, they don't separate them by model name
like "Gravel King Tubeless Ready,"
which makes things confusing if you don't know.
They're currently halting sales and recalling Tubeless tires from RACE A EVO4, so
it might be difficult to achieve stable quality for thinner tubeless tires.
Gravel King 32C is listed as compatible,
and by that logic, Gravel King SK and Gravel King SK Plus in 32C should also be compatible,
but they're not on the list.

And of course, all tubed tires are incompatible.
