Retrieving Thread from the Freewheel Pawls

A customer brought in the rear wheel from a のむラボホイール5号 (Nomu Lab Wheel No. 5) because something felt off with the pawl engagement on the freewheel body.
From a certain period onward, Shimano 11-speed freewheels on Evolight hubs switched from 3-pawl to 4-pawl designs, and since the same pawl spring force is now divided among 4 pawls instead of 3, each pawl has less lifting power, which can actually cause problems. However, this particular case involves a Campagnolo freehub, and Campagnolo versions still use the 3-pawl design, so that issue doesn't apply here.

The freewheel body was seized onto the hub axle, so I drove out the hub axle with freewheel body attached along with the right bearing from the hub body. I'll address the seizing issue separately—that's another matter to sort out. But there was thread wrapped around the pawl area of the freewheel body.

This is a Continental Gator Skin—a mid-to-high-grade German-made tire—and tires like the Grand Prix 4000S series and Grand Prix 4 Season also shed loose threads from around the bead like this. The Grand Prix 5000 has a different construction and doesn't shed these threads.

How it managed to find its way here, this thread can sometimes be spotted tangled around rear derailleur pulleys.

This wheel has green nipples, and every time a green-nipple wheel shows up here, there's this character—a "green nipple guy"—who goes on and on praising it. Since I wrote about that here before, at least 2 imposters have been confirmed, but the owner of this wheel is the real green nipple guy.
