Yesterday, when I was building Nomu Lab Wheel No. 8, I discovered a rim with an interesting specification.

This is a standard 24H AL22W rim,
and on this rim, the outer spoke holes are centered,
while the inner spoke holes show a faint but clearly
alternating left-right proper hole offset pattern.

Now, this is a specification variant (a euphemism for a defective product),
but the outer holes have a 2:1 build right-right-left hole offset pattern.
You can especially see that left-facing hole in the upper right of the image.
Looking at the inner spoke holes, they also have the 2:1 build hole offset pattern.
Building while ignoring the hole offset pattern is quite difficult, basically impossible.
I don't want to build 2:1 wheels front or rear with J-bend spokes,
but single-sale straight-spoke hubs for 2:1 builds are pretty rare,
so about the only options are breaking down complete wheels or obtaining leftover hubs from somewhere.
Alternatively, you can build a 2:1 wheel using a standard 32H universal spoke hub
by skipping holes on the low-spoke side, and if you use Sapim Strong (spoke weight ratio 104.29% based on nominal weight) on the low-spoke side,
the 13mm under-head wouldn't break easily, and since some budget-level complete wheels are regularly sold
with standard 14mm base J-bend spokes, it should be fine.
Using Strong on the low-spoke side would result in an effectively forced reverse-mismatched-diameter build, which actually looks pretty good.
The defective... I mean specification-variant 2:1 build rim—
when we did a full inventory inspection at our shop, we found 2 of them.
The AL22 (Nomu Lab Wheel No. 5's rim) narrow rim for rim brakes
does have 24H rims with 2:1 build hole offsets (zero in our purchase history),
but the AL22W doesn't have them.
A 2:1 build hole offset rim can't exist in hole counts that aren't divisible by 3—20, 28, or 32H—
and the AL22W rim's 24H disc brake offset-free specification
was bought out at our shop... for some reason there's currently no stock at the distributors,
so the distributors will also inspect rim brake rims and
disc brake offset rims with 24H to see if there are any with incorrect hole offsets.
Regarding this rim, we only informed the distributor
that we found this mixed in with our stock
and didn't return it.
I told them we don't want rims with this specification going forward,
but the 2 we have here are "interesting,"
so I told them we're keeping them. Hehehehe.
