Another day with wheels (and so on).

I received a front wheel WH-R8170-C36-TL from a customer.
Just to note, it's not something we sourced from our shop.
They want it rebuilt as a rear wheel.

The rim weight by itself.
It was a relatively light specimen.

Got it built up.

Revo disc hub, 24H, black, semi-comp, 46 JIS lacing.
I'll do the wiring later.

Current Shimano wheels use straight spokes whose heads fit normally into the hub flange, but they're threading slightly flattened spoke heads through it — kind of like squashing them into an enoki mushroom shape. Unlike Roval, where the flattened portion is cleaned up to match the width of the 2.0mm plain round section, that's not the case here. The flange has round holes, not slot-shaped ones, so flattening the spoke heads doesn't suppress rotational movement. There's work hardening from the flattening, I'm sure, but since the contact area with the flange is reduced, it doesn't seem to lower the risk of spoke breakage. If anything, it feels like the risk might be slightly going up instead.
