Another day of wheel building (and so on).

I built a front wheel with the DT XC rim that's been discontinued,
the XR331.

It's the newer DT240 hub that underwent a model change in 2021,
28H, semi-CX sprint, reverse Italian lacing.
I'll do the truing later.
Regarding spoke and nipple color,
the customer said "I'll leave it to you,"
and after getting approval, I went with silver/silver.
This rim has a minimum of 28 holes per specs,
but if it happened to exist in 24H, I'd use black spokes.
For road RR421db rims,
I use silver spokes for both 24H and 28H.
I won't go into the details of this reasoning here,
but I'll explain it to this wheel's customer.

The XR331 rim specifies the use of Squorx nipples and
PHR washers, but Squorx nipples only come in
silver and black color options...

But red came out recently.

↑The black Squorx nipple in the center of the image,
but the anodizing is thin and has a bronze-tinted gray appearance.
It was defective, so I set it aside.
With the XR331 rim, the early batches
actually weigh around 369g or 372g
(in the case of 700C rims).
By the later batches, you started seeing ones over 400g,
but this rim came in under 400g.
However, it's definitely not from the early batches either.
That's because the PHR washer included with the rim
had two dots marking the front and rear orientation.
The very earliest PHR washers don't have those marks.
The XR331 weighs about the same as Stans' Ironcloss,
but Ironcloss is
defined by the manufacturer as a "cyclocross rim,"
so the maximum rated air pressure is 45psi (3.1 bar).
So it can't be used on disc road bikes.
I've written about this many times before, but
DT rims don't determine compatible tire sizes or
maximum air pressure based on "intended use."
Tire width is specified based only on the rim's internal width,
and air pressure is specified based on tire width and tire type.
The XR331 rim has an internal width that's only
about 1mm wider than road rims like the RR411
that accommodate 23C tires, so

it's classified as an MTB rim,
with a minimum tire width of 25C,
and for that 25C with a tube, the maximum is 8.5 bar,

and for tubeless, 7 bar is guaranteed.
I can't possibly see this as an MTB rim spec.
Hmm, why did they discontinue it?
They keep releasing new models that are nothing but
incomprehensibly heavy rims with unclear purpose.
