I essentially rebuilt a Racing Zero Carbon wheel

Another day of wheel work (et cetera).

A customer brought in the front wheel of a Racing Zero Carbon (high-end carbon rim) for repair.
Out of 16 spokes, 8 consecutive ones are broken.
They said it was picked up at an auction, so
if the original owner happens to see this,
they'd recognize it as their wheel.

Just like with that 4ZA wheel the other day,
I received a comment from someone claiming to be the original owner.

Since it's possible to repair this, they were grateful and
brought it in from quite a distance away today,
but I wonder if there's any other shop besides ours
that keeps 8 spare spokes in stock
and can fix it on the spot?

RIMG6372msn5.jpg
I removed all 8 broken and bent spokes
and the nipples inside the rim.
Looking at the rim holes on the inner edge in this state,
there were some spots where the rim hole edges were slightly deformed
from the force of the spokes being yanked out,
but there were no problems for wheel building.
When I checked the rim against a glass surface plate,
it wasn't bent at all, so
I decided it could be rebuilt from here.
If it had been an aluminum rim, it might have been done for.

The 8 remaining spokes on the rim
weren't deformed or twisted,
but the corners of the nipples showed signs of careless tampering,
so they couldn't function as a guide for lateral trueness.
I mentioned this to the customer,
but rebuilding from a completely disassembled state
turned out to be easier anyway.
Since this job involved separating the hub and rim,
it counts as wheel building.
I'm the one who decides these things.
So I can claim another day of wheel work (et cetera).

It's built.

I put marker tape on the 8 replacement spokes,
but I probably spent more time
working on the nipples of the remaining spokes.
Also, one of the nipples from the original 8 spokes
was almost seized, so
I replaced that nipple too.

Per the customer's request,
I made one spoke red for a stylish accent,
but just so you know, it was the customer who first mentioned
"fancy theft" as a description in the shop today.

↑"Look, it's perfectly centered" appeal, and
stepping back a bit for the fancy theft appeal

Compared to 100 off-the-rack front wheels of the Racing Zero Carbon,
there probably isn't a single one built with more precision
than this wheel right now.
It came out beautifully.

Of the 8 nipples

RIMG6409msn5.jpg
3 had broken spoke fragments stuck inside,

RIMG6410msn5.jpg
3 I was able to unscrew and recover,

RIMG6411msn5.jpg
and 2 where the broken spoke sticking out of the nipple was too long
to fit back into the rim, so I cut them first.

Next, the rear wheel.

For this one, they wanted an inspection and some fancy styling.
It was provisionally dead-centered, and after replacing one spoke with a red one
and doing some fine-tuning of lateral play, it remained perfectly centered.
The black spokes I removed can be used for repairs,
so I'm returning them to the customer.

Based on the hub condition, it doesn't seem to have seen much use.
It feels like the front wheel seized up with a loud crash not long after it was fairly new,
and since then both wheels have just been sitting unused.
