Built a keirin front wheel with 16B Gold old-label rim

Another day with wheels (et cetera).

A customer who is a keirin racer
brought in two 36H rims of Araya's 16B Gold for me to work on.

RIMG8207msn5.jpg
This rim was treasured by one of the customer's acquaintances
and he was kind enough to pass it along.
Since it was used in Koichi Nakano's world championship pro sprint 10-peat,
it has an Alcansiel label on it.
The current stated weight of the 16B Gold is
335g, but it used to be 310g, and
I've seen specimens from this era that were on the lighter end at
around 294g.

The manufacturer's packaging vinyl had melted and
stuck to the rim, and it was quite difficult to remove.

RIMG8209msn5.jpg
Where the vinyl had been wrapped, there were
adhesive residue marks and discoloration, but

RIMG8210msn5.jpg
even after careful wiping,
the discoloration wouldn't come off.

In the image above you can also see how the rim surface
is slightly dented around the eyelets,
and if you tension this rim excessively, it will readily fail.
Of course you can tension it above the minimum needed for a functional wheel,
but you can't handle it the same way as modern rims.
In that respect, the most remarkably good in this regard is
the Nomu Lab Wheel No. 5 rim.
There's no other WO rim around 370g that can take that much tension.

There was NJS marking on it as well.

Built it.

HB-7600 front hub, 36H
Hoshi NJS No. 15 base round butted spokes
Italian cross lacing, unwrapped.
They asked for unwrapped, but still as much tension as possible.
It's not JIS laced because as long as it's an 8-spoke build with certified spokes,
it passes inspection, so per the customer's request I did Italian lacing.

NJS spokes only come in 305mm length,
and the only current models available are Hoshi's No. 15 base
round butted and flat butted varieties.
Whether the hub has small flanges or large flanges,
you can technically build an 8-spoke wheel with this length.
The difference in calculated spoke length between
the longest and shortest cases is about 1.5mm,
but this is absorbed within the threading range.
Even if the calculated length leans toward 304mm,
I don't take it upon myself to cut the spokes.
If the rear hub is single-sided, there's a small dish on one side,
but even so I build the wheel with spokes of equal length on both sides.

If this were like the relationship between Sapim's Laser and CX-RAY,
the specific gravity would be nearly identical
so the weight would also be nearly the same,
but with Hoshi's NJS spokes,
the round butted version is lighter in weight.
So this wheel
is by far the lightest wheel to be used as
"a wheel with a 7600 Duraace hub that can be used in keirin."
