Racing Zero Night Wheels

A customer brought me the front and rear wheels of a Racing Zero Night for repair.

This is the same situation as the previous post—
wheels purchased at auction where
one of them has defects.
This time it's the rear wheel again.
The front wheel had no particular problems, so I only needed to do minor truing
and didn't even take photos for a post.

One spoke on the non-freewheel side
broke suddenly while riding.
I replaced that spoke
and did lateral truing only,
but there was unnatural radial runout,

and adjacent to where the spoke broke, on the freewheel side,
two spokes were twisted,
their phase matching the radial runout perfectly.
Someone had messed with this rear wheel,
trying to improve the condition when bent spokes were causing runout.

The nipples on the twisted spokes
had their hex grip quite stripped.

After I judged which spokes and nipples needed replacement
and replaced them all,
I finally used a center gauge
once I'd finished chasing out the radial and lateral runout,
but there was no lateral offset.
I'd only touched six consecutive holes out of 21,
and the rim's vertical position aligns with the remaining 15 holes,
so it may have been guided back to its originally correct state.

It's fixed.

I replaced three consecutive spokes on each side,
but including these three holes,
about six holes total spanning both sides were twisted.
This time I only replaced what I judged needed replacement.

Looking at the fracture surface of the broken spoke,
the color differs between where a crack had been present before
and where it finally snapped.

The fracture surfaces fit together perfectly,
but even when joined, the spoke was bent,
so it seems something got caught, bent the spoke,
and then someone tried to hide the resulting runout
before putting it up for auction.

The fact that I was able to recover the twisted spoke in its twisted state
means the nipple wasn't seized.
Incidentally, even if trying to hide
the lateral runout from the bent spoke,
the adjustment attempts made on this spoke
were a completely unnecessary process.
