Rebuilt the Mavic Open Pro Rim Front Wheel

Another wheel day (and so on).

A customer dropped off a front wheel
built with a Mavic Open Pro rim.

HB-7700 hub, 32H, stainless steel 15g plain spokes
JIS-pattern 6-cross laced, brass nipples.

When viewing the wheel from the side,
if we call the side where the label reads correctly
the right side...

...then the hub shell is oriented backward.
If we consider this the correct orientation,
the rim label would be upside down.

But on the matching rear wheel,
the rim is oriented correctly.
So front and rear don't match up.
The rear wheel has its own issues
with how it was built,
but I'll write about that another time.

Spoke tension is on the loose side, but
it's above the minimum threshold for a functional wheel.
Both wheels are perfectly centered
and actually built well.
So I'll give it credit for what it is.
Cases that don't deserve even a glance (→here)

The customer's wish for the rebuild was
either 8-cross lacing with CX-RAY spokes,
or 6-cross if that wasn't possible—
and I thought, oh, they've got taste!
They really know their stuff—
but it turns out they've just been poisoned by this blog.

Built it.

32H, full CX-RAY, 8-8 Italian lacing,
with silver aluminum nipples.
I don't usually bother noting silver aluminum nipples,
but I mentioned it this time since the original had brass.

The neck of the inpoke is touching the outpoke head,
but I think it's within acceptable limits.
If this were a small-flange hub like an Evolite,
I would've gone with 6-cross instead.
