Spoke Nipples: Length, Brass vs Alloy, and Why Long Nipples Don't Mean Shorter Spokes

The smallest part in the wheel, and the one with the most quietly-held misconceptions — sorted out, with links to the original posts.

A nipple is a threaded barrel a few millimetres long, and most riders never give it a thought beyond colour. But nipple length interacts with spoke length, and getting that wrong leaves a spoke that bottoms out or one you can't tension. Here is what one workshop has worked out, with the source links — including a correction the workshop posted on itself.

1. The three lengths: 12, 14, 16 mm

A standard spoke nipple is 12 mm. So-called "long nipples" are 16 mm. And Sapim's CX-Ray ships with a 14 mm silver alloy nipple (more recent CX-Ray packs have switched to 12 mm). Those are the three you'll meet. Most builds want the 12 mm.

2. The long-nipple myth

A common belief is that using a longer nipple lets you use a shorter spoke. It doesn't. A longer nipple isn't longer because its threads start higher up — it's longer because the unthreaded portion at the inner end is deeper. The threads themselves begin at roughly the same place relative to the outer end. Swapping a 12 mm nipple for a 16 mm one does not change the spoke length you need.

3. Inside a nipple: where the spoke should sit

Picture a 12 mm nipple in the rim, spoke entering from the inner (rim-bed) end:

The workshop's spoke-length calculation targets the spoke ending flush with the nipple's outer end. At that point the spoke's thread hasn't yet reached the nipple's thread start, leaving a little under 2 mm of tightening room before the spoke bottoms out.

Why this margin matters. If the spoke is too long, it pokes past the nipple and runs out of thread — and a bottomed-out spoke is at high risk of snapping at the thread shoulder, and can't be tensioned any further to true the wheel. Flush, with ~2 mm in hand, is the target.

4. The caveat: thread depth isn't uniform

Here's the honest part, which the workshop corrected itself on. The neat rule above — "the thread start sits at the same place regardless of length" — turns out not to hold across all nipples. Tested with the same spoke, the thread depth from the outer end varies by length and by brand: a DT 12 mm alloy left the spoke poking ~2 threads, while a Sapim 16 mm alloy didn't even reach the slot. Spoke thread length varies between makers too, by up to ~2 threads.

So for a 16 mm nipple, or an unfamiliar brand, you may need to shorten the spoke from the flush figure — otherwise it bottoms out. Don't assume; check the spoke-and-nipple combination before committing to a length.

5. When you actually need a long nipple

Long nipples exist for rims that need them. On some rims the nipple seat sits further toward the inner part of the rim (Mavic CXP30, the first Cosmic Elite), so a 12 mm nipple's wrench flats never emerge and the tool can't grip — you need a 16 mm. Some thick-walled carbon rims are similar, where a 14 mm gives the wrench something to hold.

Absent that, the workshop uses only 12 mm nipples: a longer nipple's deeper unthreaded section gives it lower resistance to twisting off during adjustment. Length for its own sake is a downside, not an upgrade.

6. Brass vs alloy

Brass is the durable, forgiving choice: it rarely seizes and tolerates handling, which is why it's the right default — especially for a first build. Alloy saves a little weight, but it rounds off at the wrench flats more easily while you're building and is less forgiving overall, so it needs more care.

One honest note: the workshop suspects that once a wheel is built, alloy nipples may hold up better than their reputation suggests — but is careful not to assert it without firm grounds. The takeaway isn't "alloy is weak," it's that alloy demands a careful builder; if you round off ordinary nipples, you'll round off these too.
