The other day, I went to a trade show for a distributor that handles DT spokes,
and a fellow mechanic who was much older than me asked the distributor a question.
He pointed at some wire and solder sitting at the end of a long table
and asked, "What is this used for?"
The distributor couldn't answer, so
I said, "It's a kit for binding spokes before soldering them."
I then added, "Actually, that wire is too thick for spoke lacing, and given the material,
it'll rust later on. You're better off not using it."
But he shot back, "I've done spoke lacing with this before—this thickness is definitely right."
At that point, I wanted to say something like "Listen, I solder spokes almost every single day,
and this stuff doesn't work at all. Stop mouthing off!"
but of course I couldn't say that,
so I just answered, "Ah, I see."

↑I actually own one of these. It definitely doesn't work.
What I mean by "doesn't work" is that with this thickness,
while you can do "wrap lacing" as I mentioned in my previous post,
you can't do "tie lacing."
In the first place, it's already weird that he was asking "What is this used for?"
to begin with.
I know it's not my place to say this about someone older than me,
but pretending to know something you don't is just ugly to watch.
I've been using stainless steel wire for spoke lacing for about ten years now,
and the fact that I'm getting annoyed at someone who's even further behind
than where I was ten years ago just shows how narrow-minded I am.
