Shamal Mille

A customer left a front wheel from a Shamal Mille with me.

It collided with a car and the quick-release lever flew off,
and the rim is apparently very out of true.
Looking at it, the deflection was so bad I suspected it was in a chip-like state on first sight.
Not only the quick-release but also the left dropout hollow bolt flew off,
but first I need to check whether the wheel can be repaired.

There's deformation on the spoke directly below the largest area of run-out, and
there are scuff marks on the rim, but there's no denting on the bead hooks.
Knowing that a spoke was bent,
I attempted to true the rim centered on that spot, and the lateral run-out came out but vertical run-out appeared.
When I corrected that vertical run-out without introducing lateral run-out,
the spoke tension didn't vary significantly compared to other sections,
so I judged it repairable with a spoke replacement and replaced just one spoke.
In the photo above, that spoke is the one wrapped with white tape as a marker.
I managed to bring it to a point where I can say there's essentially no vertical or lateral run-out (equivalent to the highest precision of rim hanging),
but if this rim were disassembled down to the bare component, at the bare minimum to fit it back on the wheel,
I do think there's a very subtle warp to it.

Since it's confirmed the wheel can be fixed, I'll replace this left dropout too.

Lucky I had both in stock.

This Shamal Mille has gone to a wide rim while sporting black aluminum nipples,
but there's another change point—the spokes have grooves like cooking chopsticks in them.
I can picture the anodize peeling and micro-cracks propagating from there, or
with the nipple seized and rotated, the ampule breaking with a snap from the groove like twisting it off,
but is that really okay?
The material is aluminum, you know.
The front spokes I had in stock for Shamal Mille
(the hub flange is a smaller diameter, so they're longer than the previous Shamal Ultra)
are spare parts from before the wide rim change, so the length was the same,
but they didn't have the chopstick-like grooves.
