CC40T

A customer brought in the front wheel of a Cosmic Carbon 40 tubular for me to work on.

The image above shows the state after I removed the hub shaft and retrieved the broken spokes.

The wheel got stepped on during a crash at a race, which broke the spokes.
When they consulted with the shop that sold it to them (so they carry Mavic products),
they were told "if the hub is damaged, there's nothing we can do about it."
If the flange slots are torn, then that would indeed be true.

The outer flange doesn't show complete deformation,
but the section where the spoke heads seat looks fine,
so if the rim is okay, it should be repairable.

Ground-up powder was stuck on it from the grinding-stone type damage, so

I blew it clean with an air gun.

The spoke right next to the broken one

had its flattened section rotated 90 degrees, and

there were impact marks and subtle denting,

and the next spoke over was also subtly bent in an angular fashion.
Since you can see it even with tension applied,
it's not minor damage.

Interestingly, the next spoke after that was fine,
but then two more in a row were bent.

In the end, I had to replace 5 out of 8 spokes on one side.

It's fixed.
I marked the replaced spokes with tape.
Most of the work involved adjusting just these 5 nipples.
If the rim were damaged I wouldn't be able to fix it no matter what,
but the runout came out as good as new, so no problems.
It depends on the direction and intensity of the damage, but in this case,
if this had been an aluminum rim, it probably couldn't be reused.
Depending on the situation, carbon frames and wheels
can actually be more durable than you'd think.

But honestly, the shop—at this level of damage, it's clearly repairable, so they should've just fixed it.

If this had been beyond repair, the customer wanted the front wheel from my Nomu Lab Wheels #2,
but unfortunately it got fixed.
By the way, this repair and building the front wheel for #2 take about the same amount of work.
