Terrifying! Metal Stag Beetle!!

A customer called to say that while riding along the Yodogawa River,
something went "crack," and they'd bring it by later.

This is what they brought in.
A Carrera Eracru.

Apparently there's a fang-shaped sculpture buried in the ground,
and it accidentally caught on that.
The thing is, this sculpture actually moves.

In this case, the upper fang did the damage.
The Metal Stag Beetle doesn't move until it's absolutely certain it can take something down,
but when it strikes, it strikes to kill.
It's a pain, but you really should dismount and walk it over.


Postscript: I wrote "looks done for," but someone commented asking
if there's ever a case where it's actually NOT done for?
If the screwdriver didn't penetrate and only the surface layer peeled,
there's a shop I know that could handle it properly—not me, but they could do proper repairs
including a fresh paint job afterward. I did consider sending it there.
Not that certain place. Just so we're clear.
I've actually sent them work that another place turned down.
They might be decent at the non-destructive inspection side of things,
but their finishing and paint work is too sloppy.


Since it's another person's bread and butter, I won't go into too much detail,
but having damage on the "left" side and on the "seat stay" is comparatively better as far as conditions go.
If you quantify the stress that the rear triangle of a frame normally takes, based on experience
right chainstay / left chainstay / right seat stay / left seat stay
work out to roughly 10:7:5:4,
and this apparently also relates to the probability of tubes slipping out on lugged steel,
while for carbon fiber, the higher the number, the harder it is to repair.
Especially the right chainstay—they said that's genuinely difficult.

Even though it's the left seat stay,
being near the dropout might make things a bit tricky,
but actually there's still a possibility it could be repaired from this state.
Still, the reason I didn't propose that option to the customer is that
there's damage elsewhere too—a big gouge from the chain suck near the BB on the right chainstay,
and the outer cable stop on the back of the downtube is broken,
so I'm holding the shift outer cable with a small cable stop piece I made,
stuff like that.
I also made and glued on the chain suck plate.

By the way, the chain suck damage and the blown-out outer cable stop
were caused by the Shinoyama Highlander.
