A customer dropped off a Hyperion wheel with us.

The Hyperion has finally been discontinued.
For Campagnolo's low-profile rim wheels,
it's now just Neutron Ultra and Calima.
Calima is the budget-grade wheel sold exclusively to complete bike manufacturers—
you can't source the wheel by itself through distributors.
The customer wanted an inspection, but aside from both wheels being very slightly out of true,
there was nothing wrong. By the way, it's brand new.
The opening image is the rear wheel, but

Anti-freewheel side

Freewheel side
Equal spoke count on both sides with radial lacing on the anti-freewheel side—
usually that spells a crappy wheel,
but the three-part combo of different spoke diameters left and right, high-low flanges, and an offset rim
makes it considerably better.
By the way, this particular wheel had tight tension in the rear.


With the valve hole straight up and viewing from the right side,
the manufacturer name is on the upper rim and the model name on the lower,
both with text gravity pointing downward (readable in normal orientation).


With the valve hole still pointing straight up,
flip it around (viewing from the left) and
the manufacturer and model names reverse positions, and the text orientation flips too.

↑That's because it's a single-piece sticker.
The rear wheel can't reverse the hub axle direction, so
ideally the front wheel would follow the same pattern,
but the Hyperion hub body has a notch (more on this later) on only one side,
so the hub axle's left-right orientation shouldn't be reversible.

This is a different project—a front wheel from the original Hyperion Ultra with the distinctive red dust cap.


With the valve hole up, one side looks like this,


and flipped, the other side looks like this.
So if this front wheel were paired with the rear wheel from the opening,
you'd orient it so the first set of images faces the right side.

This is the rear wheel from the opening, but

when you remove the dust cap, there's the bearing adjustment nut.
On a front wheel, with the dust cap in place,
there's no way to tell left from right.

I removed the dust cap from the original Hyperion Ultra front wheel.
There's a notch in the flange that the dust cap snaps onto, but

that's for fitting an Allen key to the bearing adjustment nut.

With the original Hyperion Ultra,

the notch is only on one side of the hub body.
So (without modification) you can't reverse the hub axle's left-right orientation.


But the front hub on this Hyperion Ultra Two had notches on both sides.
So if the sticker orientation differed from the rear wheel,
reversing the axle direction would let us
match the front and rear sticker orientations.
Except it didn't work.

This is the front wheel we received.


On one side, both show the manufacturer name with text gravity toward the wheel's inside,


and on the other side, both show the model name with text gravity toward the wheel's outside.
This is, uh,the sticker on the opposite side of the valve hole was applied upside down
a rare variant.
So we can't match the appearance to the rear wheel.
If I had to pick which side should face right,
I'd say matching the valve hole markings would be best,
so the right side should be manufacturer name / manufacturer name, but

it was already that way from the start, so
I didn't change the hub axle orientation.


Dead-center and basically no runout.
Once the dust cap is on, you won't be able to tell left from right,
so please orient the rim sticker with manufacturer name / manufacturer name facing the right side.
