A customer brought in an Open Pro rim...
I received a rear wheel built with an Open Pro rim.

It was being used on a cyclocross bike with cantilever brakes,
but with the brake zone worn down to a thinned state, the air pressure caused

the bead hook to explode catastrophically.
Even on sections where it didn't fully explode, the bead hook has deformed and opened up. The thing is, with cantilever brakes that use the Daruma-screw type of shoe holder,
the corners rather than the brake shoe surface tend to wear against the rim,
and in cyclocross, due to the nature of competition, you're braking while dragging mud through,
so the brake zone tends to get ground down like it's headed for failure.
I'm not blaming the customer,
but there should have been a warning period where the rim was opening up before it reached this point,
so earlier replacement would have been the safer bet.

The rim specs are the same as current models, but the label is three generations old—
only Open Pro rims in blue anodize came in this label generation.
That would be around 2004 or so.

The non-drive side spokes are Shimano Starbright (spoke head with H-mark)

14-15 gauge butted round spokes,

and since they're magnetic, they're genuine Starbright.

The drive side spokes are stainless by Asahi (now defunct)
14-15 gauge butted round spokes like the non-drive side,

but these don't respond to a magnet.

The spoke lengths are just about right on both sides.

On the non-drive side, I found a spoke that deformed when I released the tension.
There was another spoke that needed replacing—not quite as bad but close—
so I swapped them both out for DT Competition spokes of similar weight.

The rim has been transferred...
I forgot to shoot photos during the transfer.

↑The non-drive side spoke I replaced

Got it built.
With an Open Pro 32H from the generation before the current label,

originally from the original build in Italian 3-cross lacing with no bracing. Well... it's just a regular wheel.

Later, I found another spoke on the drive side that needed replacing,
so I swapped it out for DT Compet as well.
