A customer dropped off a Pacenti rim with me.
It's a silver rim with the model name BREVET.
This model comes in 700C and 650B sizes, but this one is 700C.
It's a polished finish,
and the rim sidewalls have brake zone machining and other detailed work.
The sticker with PACENTI BREVET mimics the typeface and shape of MAVIC's red label,
and BREVET is French for "patent."
↑This is a Campagnolo chainring,
and BREV. means patent.
The packaging says PATENT in English,
which also means patent.
I looked into various chainrings I had on hand,
and the patent marking appears to be from an earlier era.
These chainring model names aren't called
"Brevet" or "Patent."
It's unclear which specific part, but they're just asserting "we hold a patent."
With this Pacenti rim, it's not that some patent is included in the specifications,
so they added the word "Brevet"...
BREVET itself is the model name.
BREVET has a secondary meaning of "certification,"
and there's a competitive format that bears this name.
The word "mishin" (sewing machine) comes from the English "sewing machine"—the "machine" part got corrupted or standardized into katakana with consistent spelling.
The competitive format known as BREVET with the meaning of "certification" is
generally written and called "brevet" (ブルベ) in katakana.
You almost never see it written as "buruvé."
So with this Pacenti rim, "brevet" is the appropriate way to write it,
which is the same naming convention as tires with model names like Pavé, Gravel, or Criterium.
The hub is a Record with the globe mark that the customer left with me.
Naturally given the era, the rear hub is a cup-and-cone hub,
and naturally the over-locknut dimension is normally 126mm,
but when I measured it, it had been modified to 130mm.
The customer must have changed the dimension to fit it on a 130mm frame.
Since this affects accurate spoke length calculation,
I measure all these dimensions directly.
But boy, is it well polished.
You could take it to a mirror finish, but at that point
the maintenance and upkeep down the line becomes a hassle,
so stopping here shows they "know what's up." Hehehehe.
The rear hub shows lacing marks, but
the front hub is brand new.
Though there was some polishing compound residue in the flange holes.

but when I finished building, the spoke ends came flush with the nipple face.
That's because I used the actual measured dimension of 609.5mm instead.
