This title is a repeat from before（see here），but this time it's not quite so cute.
I was servicing a bike for someone doing long-distance touring fully loaded with gear,
and the C-arm on the front of the 105 brake is rubbing.
This is because it's being rubbed by the front bag.
That's fine in itself, but once you're mounting a front bag
you end up having to set the shift outer cable a bit longer.
And rubbing against that shift outer cable, the Y-arm shows
absolutely severe wear—like someone's run a round file through it.
It's not even bare outer cable causing this; it's the cable housing that's doing the rubbing.
Since something could go wrong, I have to tell them "you should replace the brake,"
or I'd feel terrible about myself if something happens down the line.
A while back, I serviced an MTB that was entered in the Ohtaki race,
and on a new bike where the outer cable was sitting in firm contact with the seatpost,
after just one race—just running Ohtaki once—the seatpost showed wear
like someone had run a file through it. I was shocked.
You can't underestimate the damage outer cable can do.
