A customer brought in a Shamal Ultra rear wheel for repair.

The derailleur got caught and bent several spokes.

The braking surface still shows no signs of use,

and there are no bite marks from the sprockets on the freewheel body splines. It looks like this wheel hasn't been used for very long.

There are multiple bent spokes,

and the chain drop also left scratches at the base of the outer flange spokes (the spokes on the non-drive side). Even if the derailleur wrapping and chain drop happened simultaneously, they're separate issues—if there are only chain drop scratches with no spoke deformation, I basically don't replace them unless the customer specifically requests it.

Of the 14 spokes on the freewheel side, I loosened the tension on the ones showing suspected deformation and numbered them clockwise from the valve hole.

Spokes 1 and 2 were bent, somehow spoke 3 was fine, and spokes 4, 5, and 13, 14 were also bent. Except for spoke 3, they're consecutive: 13, 14, 1, 2, 4, 5.

Spoke 7 also seemed suspicious so I loosened it, but it turned out to be fine. I'm keeping the tape mark though—it's handy to have a record of which spokes I've loosened for future work.

Fixed.

I didn't replace this spoke.

↑The three spokes with chain drop marks shown in the image had no deformation either, so I didn't replace them.
