Today it's wheels again (and so on).
Built a rear wheel with XR331 rim.
FH-RS770 hub, 28H, black semi-comp, 46-cross JIS lacing
With spoke wrapping done.
I did the spoke wrapping because the customer was coming to pick up the wheel that day,
or rather, I build the rear wheel after the customer comes to the shop.
They're from quite a distance away, but they said it was convenient
to stop by Osaka since they had business in Nara that same day.
The distance between Nara and Osaka is small enough to count as "on the way."
As for the XR331 rim, I think going over 400g is a bit tough,
but I wanted to keep it as an option as long as not all 10 rims I stock
weigh over 400g. When I checked the distributor's inventory,
they couldn't even take new orders anymore.
The home country website still lists it though.
In the 2021 distributor catalog, the XR331 rim came in
28H for 26-inch / 27.5-inch / 29-inch, and
32H for 27.5-inch / 29-inch—five variations in total.
The home country website doesn't actually list the 26-inch rim.
But in the 2022 catalog,
it's listed as only one type: 27.5-inch 28H,
which is the typical way discontinued products are listed—
"this item won't be restocked,
but we'll keep the remaining inventory in the catalog."
And even that 27.5-inch 28H
is no longer at the distributor, so it's sold out.
The customer plans to use this wheel, which works with disc road bikes,
for cyclocross, but
I've told them that if the rim breaks, at least with aluminum rims,
there isn't a lighter rim than this one.
Stan's Crest MK3 is about the same weight as the XR331 or slightly lighter,
but when you mount a 32C tire (nominal), the width exceeds 33mm,
so it can't be used for cyclocross.
And this is unrelated, but the Crest MK4, the successor to the Crest MK3,
became an offset rim and got slightly heavier than the previous model.
The Crest MK3 29-inch rim is nominally 364g,
while the Crest MK4 29-inch rim is nominally 399g.
