About Park Tool Spoke Wrenches

Regarding the #12 nipple for plain spokes from the previous article,
the grip width has a nominal diameter of 3.9mm.

As the corresponding nipple wrench,
I originally had Park Tool's "blue"
SW-3, and it shows quite a bit of wear
not because we turn #12 nipples often at our shop,
but because we use it when turning aluminum nipples with a grip width of 3.95mm
(the threaded hole is naturally #14,
and the nominal diameter is sometimes called 4mm)
found on Campagnolo Bullet and
post-internal-nipple Bora wheels,
as well as Shimano carbon rim wheels and others.
That said, I only use it during initial assembly at low tension,
or for quickly turning nipples that I've loosened somewhat for replacement,
while high-tension nipple work uses
a different spanner-type wrench.

↑This is the SW-0, the "black" one, for a grip width nominal diameter of 3.2mm.
By the way, SW stands for Spoke Wrench.
The far left in the image is brand new still in its blister pack,
and it gets more worn as you go right.

↑While the nominal diameter is listed as 3.2mm,
the actual specified value is 3.23mm.
For the "red" SW-2 with nominal diameter 3.4mm, it's 3.45mm,
and for the "blue" SW-3 with nominal diameter 3.9mm mentioned at the start,
it's 3.96mm.

There's a tendency that the dimensional tolerance relative to nominal diameter
becomes larger as the width increases,
but for the "green" SW-1, which seems most obscure,
the nominal diameter is 3.3mm, with actual dimensions of 3.30mm.
I didn't write "also" for actual dimensions
because the meanings of 3.3mm and 3.30mm are
technically different.
Our shop doesn't have the SW-1,
but we have the dedicated wrench for the aluminum nipple
of a certain complete wheel that uses a 3.3mm nipple,
so there's no problem.

Looking at reviews on a certain mail-order site,
amateurs buying SW-1 are using it for different-sized wheels,
or mistaking it for a universal-size nipple wrench.
Yikes.

Park Tool explicitly states
the SW-1 is compatible with only two nipples:
one is the Sapim Polyax,
a nipple with somewhat special rim contact surfaces,
available in brass and aluminum with bore sizes #14 and #15,
compatible only with the #14 brass version,
and the other is Sapim's universal #13 brass nipple,
so for assembling sports bike wheels,
it's essentially a dedicated tool for the former.

Getting back to our shop's SW-0,
the image above shows one in near-new condition
where the Park Tool printing on the handle hasn't worn off yet,

and as it gets used,
the contact point with the spoke wears slightly.
The handle loses its Park Tool printing,
and becomes noticeably thinner compared to new.

↑This is the most worn nipple wrench,
and the wear here visually shows the degree of use,
but what's important is that
this wear correlates with the grip width wear.
A brand-new SW-0 with the nominal 3.23mm specification
can actually be harder to turn certain nipples with,
so having several SW-0s that are under 3.3mm and closer to 3.3mm is convenient.
