Rebuilt the front wheel of the WH-R8170

Another day working on wheels (and so on).

Continuing from yesterday.
I'm rebuilding the front wheel of the Altegra C50.
The customer already has another C50,
and I only inspected the front wheel on that one
in its original condition,
but this time I'm rebuilding the front wheel
with new spokes.
It wouldn't make sense to have only the rear wheel
with rainbow-colored nipples anyway.

Unlike the rear wheel, there are no marks
on the axle nuts from a hub wrench.
Maybe they didn't have a 22mm hub wrench,
let alone a 17mm one.

The hub rotation was quite gritty.
Since the front wheel uses the same number of spokes
on both sides, I'm torn between
using Altegra hub with straight spokes
or a Revo disc hub with bent spokes,
but if the hub grinding doesn't go away,
I'll have to go with the Revo disc hub.

The right side cone showed no problems.

The left side cone...

Shows signs of pitting in some areas.

This front wheel wasn't sold by our shop,
but as an exceptional measure, I'm using
our rescue parts for this type of issue
(→here).

As I've mentioned before,
the spoke length on this wheel is too long.
When disassembling the wheel, I loosen the spoke tension
to a certain degree before cutting,
but the spoke with the blue thread-locking compound
visible in the image above—with the threads protruding—
is one where I never loosened the nipple at all.

Even though the nipple has a slightly longer shaft
extending from the rim hole compared to standard nipples,
the spoke threads are sticking out about 4-6 threads
beyond that point.
With a standard nipple, that would be 6-8 threads
sticking out.

Campagnolo and Mavic wheels sometimes have
longer threaded portions on their spokes
compared to standard parts,

but these Altegra spokes compared to the silver
CX-RAY on the left in that image
don't really differ from standard parts.

What's more, by calculation, the left and right
spoke lengths should differ by at least 1mm
(probably to simplify spare spoke management),
but here they're the same length—a lazy design.
It's possible that in those spoke photos earlier,
the ones with 4 threads protruding are mainly from the left,
and the ones with 6 threads protruding are mainly from the right.

It's built.

Rebuilt Altegra hub, 24H
Black half CX Sprint straight spokes
Forced left-right 2-cross lacing
with rainbow-colored (VAS) pattern nipples.
I'll do the valve stem installation later.
