Another day with wheels (and so on...).

Continuing from yesterday.
From the SES 2.2's two rear wheels

I'm building a rear wheel with a Chris King hub and WO rim.
Both pairs of wheels this time
weren't originally owned by the customer,
but the customer themselves has applied
balance weights to all four wheels, front and rear,
so I haven't measured the actual weight of the rims.
The tape that was on the WO rim's front wheel
was DT rim tape,
but the rear wheel had Panaracer tape.

I'm building this wheel right in front of the customer,
and when I showed them the spoke on the non-freewheel side
of the in-house ENVE hub wheel—which had an unmarked spoke head
but had SAPIM stamps in the plain section near the head—
using my digital camera as a makeshift magnifying glass,
I accidentally hit the shutter button.
That's the image above.
The reason I wrote "spoke on the non-freewheel side" is that
the non-freewheel side spokes were custom CX-RAY with
crush flattening, same as the front wheel,
but the freewheel side had been changed to DT Champion spokes.
If the previous owner had seen this,
they'd probably be able to identify it as their old property.
Whether the asymmetric lacing is following
the nomunlab method or not, I can't say,


The rear wheel with the Chris King hub—not an in-house product—
centered dead-on,


whereas the rear wheel I rebuilt from the in-house product
had the rim shifted in the opposite direction
from how it naturally shifts with age.
The rim shifting toward the non-freewheel side (left side)
means higher tension on the non-freewheel side,
but since the right side wasn't properly tensioned to begin with,
the non-freewheel side was half-champion—
quite an extreme asymmetric lacing that seemed pretty loose—
I actually thought it might be better off
just slightly retensioning the wheel in its original factory-built state.
With this rebuild project, tinkering with the wheel
and possibly making it worse than before is one thing,
but if they're thinking "I rebuilt it using the nomunlab method
but it didn't transform at all,"
that would be a shame.
No offense to the previous owner,
but this rear wheel is experiencing real performance improvement
over its factory-built state for the first time today.


↑This is what I got by progressively removing nipples starting from the valve hole,
then extracting the very last few spokes that hadn't had their nipples loosened at all—
and the Champion spoke on the freewheel side was too long.
I think they followed the original CX-RAY length,
but the factory build being this long...
well, technically it's possible.
The Chris King hub wheel also had
slightly oversized spoke lengths,
so for the non-freewheel side spokes
I cut the original Chris King hub's
non-freewheel side CX-RAY
(one of the 12 was slightly bent, so I replaced just that one),
and for the freewheel side spokes
I cut the original ENVE hub's freewheel side Champion.
The original inpokes stayed as inpokes
and the original outpokes as outpokes—
I threaded them all precisely and reused them.

Built.

Rebuilt with a Chris King hub and WO rim.
Lucky to have caught it in the photo,
but I got the spoke length flush with the nipple end face,
and I had the customer verify it too.
As I wrote when doing the front wheel,
the SES 2.2's WO rim especially
benefits from not having spoke thread protrusion.

R45 hub, 24H, black half-champion.
Prioritizing spoke reuse,
so 4-cross lacing with spoke bracing.
Before bracing, I had the customer verify
that it feels significantly stiffer
compared to either of the original two rear wheels.
