A customer brought in a Shamal 12 for me to work on.

It's the model with the fewest spokes in Shamal history—12 spokes front and rear.
The customer wanted it set up to work with a Campagnolo 11-speed sprocket.

This is a freewheel body for Campagnolo 9-speed.
The shaft design didn't match current standards until 2002 onward, so this mid-90s freewheel body is incompatible with current freewheels.
Swapping it for a Shimano freewheel body is also impossible in principle.
I say "in principle" because it's been done before, but that's not relevant to this job, so I'll skip that story.
Earlier Shamal models with 12 front and 16 rear spokes are compatible with 8-speed freewheel bodies, so downgrading to 8-speed is technically possible.
(Though I doubt anyone would want to do that.)
The year after Shamal came out, the component group went to 9-speed, so Campagnolo released a 9-speed freewheel body for Shamal to help users who'd just bought the wheel but couldn't use it with their new 9-speed groupset.
Shimano probably would've just cut you off there.
This is probably one of those.
The point is: the rear hub is still designed from the 8-speed era.
The Campagnolo 9-speed freewheel body ended up having the same dimensions all the way through 10-speed and 11-speed.
So this freewheel body will accept an 11-speed sprocket.


It will fit, but the rear hub interferes with the sprocket.
When they were retrofitting 8-speed hubs to work with 9-speed, there was no way they could've predicted interference with 11-speed sprockets, so it can't be helped.


So, using them in a way they weren't originally intended,
I decided to space the sprocket outward using a Mavic ED11 spacer.
Naturally, shifting adjustments in this case become "specific to this wheel only."
One spacer caused interference when the lockring was tightened, so I used two.

But with that setup, the top cog (12T) no longer engaged with the splines.
Even if I forced it on, the right end nut and lockring would bottom out, and when the wheel was installed on the frame, the rear wheel wouldn't spin.

As for what "12-HPW Titanium" means on the rim:
12 is the spoke count, and HPW is an acronym for High Performance Wheel.
Titanium refers to the hub shaft being titanium, and Campagnolo's titanium hub shafts have the company name laser-etched on one end (steel ones don't).

The pawls on the freewheel body are raised individually by springs, but getting them to seat in the hub body is extremely tricky.


That's where a tool like this comes in—you hold the pawls down while inserting it into the hub body.

It's a legitimate factory tool, just so you know.

And that's how we ended up here.

I can't guarantee that shifting will work perfectly with a standard 11-speed setup with this configuration, but it might actually work out fine.
The wheel center should shift slightly, which I did correct for, but there was more center deviation than my adjustment should have caused, so the wheel probably had center issues to begin with.

The tire is brand new, but I did take it out for a test ride to be sure.
